The City of Fort Worth has recently recognized the World War I Camp Bowie Base Hospital. Camp Bowie, named after James “Jim” Bowie, was established as a training facility for the 36th Infantry Division after the United States declared war on Germany in April 1917. Among the camp’s facilities was the Base Hospital which formally opened on September 24, 1917. During it time in service, this hospital performed over 1,900 surgeries.
